Facts and Figures

Bedok has an estimated HDB resident population of 203,900 and we manage 59,205 flats within the town (as of 31 March 2014).

History of Bedok

The name Bedok has been in existence since the time of Sir Stamford Raffles. The town’s name is most probably derived from the Malay word ‘Bedoh’, as there used to be a mosque in the area that would sound its drums five times daily to signal the prayer times.

Evolving Through The Years

Early plans to develop Bedok into an HDB town began in 1963. That was when HDB, acting as an agent for the Government, undertook a pilot east coast reclamation scheme using earth excavated from the area.

Since then, Bedok has transformed into the vibrant town it is today, with a good mix of modern amenities and nature.

As part of the Remaking Our Heartland initiative for the East Coast area, the Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre was revamped in 2015 and officially opened in January. This marked the third development to be completed under the ROH plans, with the other two being Bedok Mall and the Bedok Integrated Transport Hub.

Notable Places

Bedok Reservoir was created as a result of the deep excavation works to provide earth for the sea reclamation work. A tranquil getaway from the bustling town centre, the reservoir is a popular place for exercise and recreation.

Come the first half of 2017, residents can look forward to the upcoming Bedok Integrated Complex, as well as dedicated cycling and pedestrian paths connecting Bedok Reservoir Park to Bedok Town Centre and East Coast Park.
